Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

My landlord towed my car off of the property in which we reside and i believe it was illegally as it was an independent tow company that removed the vehicle. I want to report the car stolen, however, it was brought to my attention by my boyfriend that he had given the title for the car to the tow truck driver. My question is, what can I do to have the vehicle returned to me?

If the title was in your boyfriend's name, how can you take title of the vehicle? If you want to take title to the vehicle, you would have to purchase the automobile from the owner - in this case the tow truck driver.
