Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

Converting Exchange Status into Permanent Residency

To whom may answer

I am 27 years old and currently working as an intern in the Asset Management subsidiary of a major Swiss bank in New York. I am currently paid out of Switzerland and hold a J-1 visa that is valid until the middle of 1999. Since I am applying to business schools in order to get my MBA and because I like it very much in the States, I would like to know how I will have to go about receiving permanent residency. I can give you the following additional information. I spent my senior year of high school in the USA and graduated with honors. I was also holding a J-1 at that time. I hold a valid US bachelors degree in business and administration. I have no criminal record and intend to stay in the US after business school.

Thank you for your help.

Converting Exchange Status into Permanent residency

In order to obtain permanent residency in the US, you must have a basis for qualifying. For example, if you have an employer who needs you because he can't find an American to do your job, that is one way. Another way is if you have a close relationship to an American like a spoouse of parent, that person can sponsor you. Another way is to enter and win the lottery. Another way would be if you are extraordinary in your field, you can file a petition on your own behalf. If you need more detailed info, I suggest that you call my office to set up an appointment.
