Legal Question in Insurance Law in New York

Homeowners insurance

During heavy rains this past month my sump pump did not work and I had damage to my basement.I filed a claim with my homeowners ins. I have water backup coverage. They told me when I called in the claim at 6 p.m. at night that they had reputable people to do the clean up and I was advised to use them. The cleanup started at 8 p.m. till 11 p.m., they riped up carpeting and cut sheetrock and vacuumed water and disposed of the debris. The next day they came to my home for approx.5 hours and then left, 4 dryers and 2 dehumidifiers were left at my home for 3 days. They sent an itemized bill to my insurance co. for $5100.00 They are charges which are exorbitant. I was under the impression I had more coverage than the insurance company says I had. They said I asked them to lower the coverage last year.(from 10000.00 to 5000.00) I do not remember doing so. I am only covered for $5000.00. Do I just accept this bill and have my homeowners pay , what do I do? I really feel the charges are way out of line.

Please help

thanks

Re: Homeowners insurance

1. Did you use a broker? If so direct these questions to him.

2. If not, did you keep your insurance declaration pages from the renewal of the policy each year? That should contain this info.

3. Failing the above, take the company to arbitration.
