Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Old landlord is trying to collect rent after 3 years of being out. Long story short....we lived in an apartment we asked to be let out of our lease early because they werent taking care of sanitary issues in the place. they let us out early no problem. 3 years later we get a letter stating we owe $2600 which includes 9 percent interest. not once in the last three years have they attempted to collect a debt no phone calls nothing. what should we do????

If the landlord did not commence a lawsuit, you should send a letter denying the claim. Other then that, there is nothing else to do.

If the landlord commenced an action, you must appear and file an answer denying the claim.
