Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

leaving before a lease ends

How will my breaking my lease affect me getting another apartment? Is my present landlord bound to say that I broke my lease and does/will that put up an automatic redflag to other landlords even if I left the apartment on good terms?

your present landlord has the right to give you no reference or a good reference; at his own discretion. he is not bound to give an accurate reference.

on the other hand, there are landlord data bases and your landlord may list you as a poor tenant. if he brings a legal action, that becomes a public record and is accessable to other landlords.

that is the best information that i can give you.

good luck.

Re: leaving before a lease ends

Your landlord has no legal obligation to report that you broke your lease. That being said, landlords are often asked of prospective landlords of past tenancies and generally they cooperate with each other. It is likely that your past history could affect your future ability to rent. Or at least make it more difficult.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can call my office to schedule an appointment for a consultation or in the alternative, I can be reached for on-phone low-cost legal consultation at 1-800-275-5336 x0233699.
