Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I've been locked out of my apt.

I rent an illegal basement apt in nyc. The owner just locked me out when I went out this morning. I don't have a lease or rental receipts. Can I call the police or bring him to court?

Yes. Call the police. Furthermore, you have a cause of action based on your landlord's lockout.

NYPD will typically respond and then require the landlord to grant you access if you can establish that it is your residence. Utility bills and a driver's license usually suffice.

Also try going to a neighborhood legal service office like Bronx Defenders or South Brooklyn Legal Services. They can help now with NYPD and also help you later after you get back in. You may be able to sue the landlord for illegal eviction.
