Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Hi Team:

My husband married me in 1980. He shared an apartment with out Best man for our Wedding that was rent stabilize in the Village New York. . The day we got married my husband left the apartment and moved with me in another apartment in Queens. When he moved out his roomate said dont worry about i'll find another roomate . We had no contact again with this guy other then one funeral for a mutual relative. Apparently my husbands name was the only one on this said lease when we got married. When it expired this man did not change it to his name but continued to forge my husbands name adding to it another last name he invented. He also subletted to another other guy. Well now after 30 YEARS and beknowst to us we received a call out of the blue that the apartment building wants a signed affadavit

from a notary that we live there and are giving up residence in the apartment. Apparently the man who is subletting from him now

wants to collect X amount of thousands of dollars in allowing the apartment owners to get this off rent stabilization, The actual rent should be about 2500 dollars a month . His current rent was 400 a month for these 30 years. He says his lawyers told him he will get up to 100,000 dollars if we sign this for him.!!!! He is a complete stranger to us and we never met this guy ! He is 61 years old and currently and has been on welfare for all these years!! I am LIVID with disgust over this. My husband

and i would NEVER , NEVER, Sign any type of papers to that effect , or purger ourselves for this person or ANYONE!!!! My husband has a high up security clearance position with the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT and worked his entire life as an UPRIGHT CITIZEN - Hes finally turning 65 years of age and we are about to retire! What should we do here? This man has been calling us now and harrassing us to sign papers on an apartment we havent seen or been near for over 30 years!!!!!!! In fact my husband was only living in it a few months before I met him and we got married. We always thought the Best Man took over the lease when we went on our honeymoon! The name on the lease is now a combination of my husbands whole name with some long greek name added to the end of it! The men have been paying their rent all these years with moneyorders or cash. This is an outrage and after three calls I refuse to pick up the phone to talk to these corrupt individuals!!!!!! What rights do we have for litigation purposes pertaining to identity theft from these people? Do i need to hire a Lawyer???????? What cost would it be for someone to handle this type of case???? Thank you so much !!!!!!!!!
