Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

I let someone in my family borrow my laptop that i had bought with a school loan for school and i was not in school at the time and they asked to borrow it and i said yes, then she had told me she was going to buy one for herself and then give mine back, however i told her no, keep it, meaning for now not for good, and the next day when i asked for it back she said no it was a gift you gave it to me I said no i want it back u misunderstood me i never wanted to give it to you i want and need it back well she refused to give it back, i didn't know what to do, because she said nine tenths is possession of law, so i thought i couldn't get it back then i heard it was broke and for awhile i thought it was broke, i still asked for it back so i can salvage it and she said no, now it is fixed and i still want it back but she won't give it back. I have documentation proving that it is mine and she just took over possession.

Small Claims Court. You don't need an attorney. You will need documentation proving ownership of the computer. In addition, it wouldn't hurt to bring along a witness to testify that she is in possession of the computer. Good Luck.
