Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

I want to rent a vacant lot on my block (in NYC) for my small gardening business, to use as storage & parking. There is a phone number posted on the lot, which I called, & spoke to a person who told me that they will need my company bank account information, to make sure I have proper assets for rent payments. (He said the lot is $1000/month.) I am assuming this is someone trying to scam me, but don't know how to find out. What does a lot landlord generally require when renting to someone? The minute he said he needed bank account info, I grew distrustful. What's the process for vacant lot rentals in NYC? Thanks!

I would search the property records at the City Register's office to determine the owner of the vacant property and contact him/her directly.
