Re: False claim on federal tax return

The insertion of intentionally false material information in a tax return is fraud and there are penalties that can be imposed.

The filing of an amended return and the immediate payment of the additional tax may, but not with certainty, eliminate the penalty. Interest of course will be due on the additional tax.

SIMPLY FILE AN AMENDED RETURN (FORM 1040x) AND MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT. SINCE THERE WILL BE A BALANCE DUE BASED UPON THIS ADJUSTMENT, EXPECT TO BE BILLED FOR INTEREST AND PENALTIES. EXPLAIN THAT THE CLAIMING OF THE EXTRA DEPENDENT WAS INADVERTENT.
