Legal Question in Tax Law in New York

Hello, I recently received a letter from my bank stating that a hold was placed on my account for tax owed in a state I never lived or worked in. This is due in part to having my identity stolen in 2000. I did fill a police report in the state I resided at that time and which I am attempting to get a hold of the report. I also have copies of my tax return from the IRS showing what my income at that time of this action not by my part. I this a matter I could possibly un-cluster by myself or should I look into a lawyer? And if so, which lawyer should I look into, tax or identity theft? Thank you for the time.

You can probably handle it yourself. Merely tell the facts in detail to the state tax authority. If this fails, then consider hiring a lawyer with familiarity with the tax procedure in the state that seeks to collect the tax.
