Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Car Accident I caused, what about assets now?

July/'01 I caused a car accident that involved three other vehicles. I was the only one taken to the emergency room at the time. I have been sued by all three parties. Two of the suits have been settled and waivers signed. The third should be settled mid-July. April/'03 I got married. My concern is my husband's and my assets. Though minimal (under $100k, mostly cash and stocks) do we have any risk of possibly loosing this? Should everything go into my husbands name/SS#? Joint? Or have we worked ourselves up over nothing? Thanks!

Re: Car Accident I caused, what about assets now?

While this is not a 'traffic' question, I can still give you a good answer. The liability/debt is all yours. Your husband did not 'marry' it when he married you. More good news: your auto insurance will likely cover the 3rd car as well.

However, it is a good idea to consider protecting your assets. As a married couple, some of your assets will now become a part of a 'marital estate'. You are welcome to a consultation at no fee at my offices at 42 West 44th St. Please call for an appointment first (646) 591-5786.
