Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Speeding ticket

I live in Pittsburgh, PA, my recent trip to Montreal, I had a speeding ticket.

Speed limit was 65, and I did not realize I was at 80 mph, - it happend in Sate of New York, county OSWEGO town of Richland.

I sent back Plead as NOT GUILTY - my car was originally in Canada, so it was metric system, sometimes I got confused between the 2, but never meant speeding.

My question: they will ask me appear in court in New York State town of Pulaski (it's a good 6 hours drive from Pittsburgh) what can I do to avoid appear in cout and still receive Not Guilty - bottom line, I just don't insurance premium to go up because of this

Thanks

Tam

Tam,

Most Courts and prosecutors in NY will allow reductions for speeding tickets. I suggest you write the Court a letter stating that you are from PA and would ask the Court's indulgence in allowing you to plea to a reduced violation of either an "equipment violation" or a "Section 1110A, Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device." If the Court will not do this for you then call me and we can discuss other options.
