Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Title

A friend of mine did me a favor when I purchased a SUV from a dealership. I was having personal problems and couldn't have a car in my name so he agreed to Ins. Reg. it for me and the dealership said it had to also be Titled in his name, which I come to find out later that is untrue. I have a bill and copy of the check to the dealership and copy of the purchase in my name. I paid my friend for the insurance w/checks and even wrote ''FINAL PAYMENT'' on the last check for the insurance and he cashed it, from which im told the binds a contract. He has become upset w/me due to I will not date him and has taken the plates and reg. sticker from the SUV. I told him I want the Title signed back to me and he has REFUSED to do so. He admits that I am the owner. I contacted DMV here in NY and they told me to contact the Title dept. of DMV and tell them the story and have a new Title sent to my address and that will VOID the 1 he has. The problem is i will still be in his name and I can't even reg. and ins. it now. What can I do?? I have a vech. sitting in my driveway that I can't use. ANY suggestions?? PLEASE HELP. Thank you,

Allison
