Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

NY state probate question.

I have received letters from surrogate court (Aug 1)appointing me as executor of my fathers estate. He passed away in Dec 09. He lived with me and has no property only 2 bank accounts and no bills. Can someone explain the required waiting period for sending checks to beneficiaries in NY?

If the Executor has verified that nothing is left to be done (all bills and estate expenses paid, all required tax returns have been filed and taxes paid. all assets have been located, etc.), and nothing remains to be done but distribute the estate, distribution can be done. There is no set waiting period, but the Executor should be cautious and allow sufficient time to see nothing remains to be done, as the Executor can become responsible if something arises after the assets are distributed. This is a response to an Internet question and the reply is not intended to be legal advice or as creating an attorney-client relationship.
