Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

The person my mother chose as her Executrix in her will is now deceased. Can my mother choose another executor/executrix or does one have to be appointed by a judge? If my mother can choose, how does she go about it?

She either signs a new Will or a Codicil (amendment) to the old Will, to designate a new Executor.

Your mother can change any and all terms of her Will so long as she is competent to do so.
