Re: Independence of judiciary in Nigeria

Independence of the judiciary is the defining index of a true democracy. For Nigeria to achieve this and make its democracy meaningful, judicial appointees and court officials must be men of integrity not appointed for their political loyalty but for their intellectual and moral forthrightness.

The judges must not be made the apron-strings of the Executive and the legislature. To achieve this, their salaries as a matter of priority must be charged into the consolidated revenue fund.Their salaries must not be paid at the mercy of the state Governor for he that pays the piper is most likeky to dictate the tune.Importantly also, the appointment of judges must not be a prerogative of the Governor, who is only but a politician. The state and national judicial council should appoint judges based on merit. These few points will ensure the independence of the judiciary and give meaning to our fledging democracy.
