Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

My husband has peripheral neuropathy and is now disabled. He was out of work 6months before getting any assistance. He has one credit card that had a balance of 11,000 and had always paid ontime and more than minimum payment. When he was unable to work, he called them and asked if he could get his payment lowered or work out a payoff. The lowest amount they would come up with was 7,000. We do not have that kind of money. They have added penalties and over the limit fees to the point there's no way we can pay it. So, we are not making a payment at all. What can they do to us?

They can sue you and get a judgment against you. Then they can try to enforce the judgment which will depend on what your assets are. More facts are needed - such as whether this credit card was solely in your husband's name, what your assets are like, etc. If you do not pay it, most likely they will sell it or assign it to a collection's agency. But more facts would be needed to advise you on the best course of action.
