Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

Threats on the Internet

Two friends and I had an argument and decided to end the friendship. Since that time, I have been threatened by one of them, her sister, and another friend of hers through emails. I have printed copies of these emails. Also ones that were sent during our argument, and the replies from me.

What I am trying to find out is can I take any legal actions against them for threatening me and for harrassing me after they were asked to stop emailing me?

The ones who have threatened me all live in either PA or NJ. I live in NC.

I would really appreciate some help with this.

Re: Threats on the Internet

This is not an easy question to answer. There are laws on the books regarding communicating a threat and for harassing phone calls. Your best bet would be to talk with your local magistrate, who must initiate the action whenever charges are brought by a citizen. You could also try to talk to your local District Attorney. Since these folks have the discretion to bring charges, and since they know what will fly and what will not in their particular districts, they are your best bet. I suspect that we will have some more laws coming from the legislature pretty soon to include this type of problem. Good Luck Annemarie Haner
