Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

I live in NC and I am seperated from my husband. We were only married for 1 1/2 years before I got pregnant and my husband has been very vocal in letting me know he doesn't want anything to do with this child. While we were together he was dealing with his ex wife again. We seperated in August of last year but during the serpation the only time he called me was to ask me for money that he paid for rent while we were together. During the marriage I paid the rent but there was one month that I did not have the money and he paid the rent. There was also the deposit that we needed in order to move into the house. When we moved out the homeowner kept the deposit because my husband had messed up the concrete driveway by putting salt down during the snow and it was going to have to be repaved. So now he feels like I should not only reimburse him for the rent money ($3500) but also the deposit money that we lost ($10,000). The last time I heard from him was in early Novemeber and he told me that he had not forgotten that I owe him money and he wanted me to pay all his money back to him or else. He has never asked me about the baby only about the money. Now that I've had the baby and I'm afraid that he'll try to fight me for our daughter out of spite becasuse I refuse to give him the money back. When the baby was born out of respect I tried to call him and let him know but he had my number blocked so I never reached him. He is ex-military so his insurance has taken care of part of the doctor bills but the other half I've had to pay. He hasn't offered to help with anything needed for the baby before or since she's been born. The baby is only 5 days old and I just don't know how to proceed with this situation. I don't have the money to pay him but I don't want my daughter to be used as a pawn. What do I do?

You do not owe him any money. You do need a lawyer, and soon. He is a bad actor and you need to get your rights set forth in a court order so that you don't have to keep dealing with this garbage from him.
