Legal Question in Real Estate Law in North Carolina

if a real property deed is registered but never delivered and the grantor is deceased is the deed legal? we found the deed in his/her personal belongings after his/her death. the deed was registerd 55 years ago and he/her never delivered the real property deed. The grantor had paid all taxes and all other financial responisibilites until his/her death.
