Legal Question in Workers Comp in North Carolina

How do I know if I am required to carry workman's comp?

I currently have a drapery workroom with 10 employees, some are family. I would like to quit carrying workman's comp insurance, it costs me $4000.00 per year, and business is slow. Is it possible to drop work comp and pay employees to sew at home instead of coming here to sew for me?

You should speak with your company attorney and your CPA before making any decision. While it is possible to do business with "independent contractors," it is also possible to go to jail, get fined, have judgments against you, or all of the above. You're not the first employer who thought of this. I do not recommend "going naked" without coverage regardless of the circumstances.
