Music Sharing

If I buy a music CD and copy it to my computer, I'm perfectly legal.

My question is: Is it legal for me to send a copy of a digital music file to a friend via E-mail or Instant Messenger?

If it is not legal, is there some term used for it? Would it be music pirating?

Yes, it is illegal, and it is copyright infringement.
