Legal Question in Criminal Law in Ohio

are hands considered a legal weapon?

When the jury was deliberating today they sent out a question, are hands considered a legal weapon in a felonious assault case. The tape from the bar showed that he did not use the beer mug as the prosecuter said so could they use the hands as legal weapons when he punched him. He has no formal training of any kind. The prosecuter said yes and they found him quilty. So if this is true how can felonious assault with a punch of your fist be different from misdomeaner assault. One carries 6 mon. one carries 2 to 8 years. What is the difference between felonious assault and misdomeaner assault if there is not a weapon only your bare fist.
