Filling Out The Birth Certificate At The Hospital...

My boyfriend often travels for work. He doesn't have the option of taking time off until after our child is born. As my due date approaches we are worried that if he is not at the hospital at the time of birth then he won't be able to sign the birth certificate. Since we are not married, would I still be able to sign his name to the birth certificate without him being there? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Maybe they will allow him to sign when he gets home. If not, you can always establish paternity in Court. It would be a fairly brief affair since he will consent to paternity at the first Court Hearing. Actually, him signing the birth certificate only creates a presumption of paternity, unless he also completes a paternity affadavit. Ask them about this at the hospital. If they can't help you, contact an attorney. Best Regards, Edward DiCato
