In Ohio, a legal separation is something that you can petition for in court and that the court can grant. You will still be legally married, but you will live separate and apart with visitation rights set up by the court for the children, and alimony and spousal support set up as well. Property will also be divided up equitably.

It is used for certain types of people whose religious beliefs do not allow for a formal divorce, or when perhaps one person is covered by the other's insurance for a condition that would never be covered by a new insurance company so the court keeps the parties married, but allows them to live as if they are not.

But simply moving from one place to another is not a legal separation.
