How to respond to a Summons of Complaint letter
My husband and I each recieved a letter of Summons of Complaint from a food vendor of a previous event held in our town. The idea for event was good, but it was managed poorly with finacial debts left to settle for the local historical society.
Two and a half years later we formed a grass roots group to re-introduce the event, asking for volunteers from the historical society who were once in charge of the first event. We kept the same name for recognition purposes only, but WE received the Summons of Complaint to pay for a contested bill from the food vendor.
The historical society is vouching for our new group's non-involvement of the other event (we were not even a part of its organization at that time). How should we respond in writing. We were told to get a lawyer, but we cannot financially go that route.

You have 28 days from receipt of the complaint to file a response. If you are unincorporated you can represent yourself, but that would be a bad idea. Get a lawyer. You might want to contact the local bar association to see if they have a lawyer referral service.
