trespassing child was bitten by guard dog

Child's ball went over fence and into neighbor's back yard. When child went throught gate to retrieve the ball, the dog attacked him. The child is six years old, can the dog owners be sued?

The land owner potentially has some liability, especially if this was a regular occurrence (the child coming into the yard), and they didn't have the dog properly contained (ie: leash).
