Breaking a lease for safety reasons

I have a lease that is up May 1st 2002. This weekend I had an incident with people across the street that chased me into my apartment and the did about $2000 damage to my car. I need to move because I am prosecuting and have no where to put my car and fear for my safety at night and my belongings when I am not here. I gave the landlord 30 day notice on Dec 3. He told me that if I move out by Dec. 15 I would only have to pay December and January rent and he would hold my security deposit. My lease is year to year but I can get police reports and such. I have no idea what to do? I was told all I would have to do was pay up until Dec. 15 and let him keep my security deposit. Any input?

Look up constructive eviction. If the conditions are so deplorable that you can not stay, then you can break the lease. As a practical matter, I agree that the landlord can keep you deposit and you pay the rent up till Dec. 15.
