Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Ohio

My mother in law wants to give me and my husband the house that we currently rent from her. She said something about a quit claim deed, but I have no idea what that is. Could someone possibly tell me what the process is for transfering a house into our names. Is it anything like transfering a vehicle? Will there be any type of costs?

Real estate is transferred by a deed that is recorded with the county recorder's office.

You should make sure that you and your mother-in-law have considered all the consequences of gifting this house such as gift taxes and income taxes. You should also understand the consequences on Medicaid planning.

I would suggest that you consult with an attorney to discuss all aspects of this transaction.
