Legal Question in Traffic Law in Oklahoma

Illegal search of car

I was stopped by a city police on an interstate for speeding. After the police took my license to do a check another officer drove up and said he wanted to search my car with a drug dog. I asked why they wanted to search my car for a speeding charge. He stated they search every car they stop. I investigated the city police department and they do not have enough dogs to search every charge they stop. They searched the out side of my convertible which the top was down and found nothing but said they had the right to search the outside of my car as long as it did not detain me for the length of the license check. Can they do they? I feel my rights were violated due to the fact they did not have probabal cause to search me for a speeding ticket.

Yup, they can, but they cannot delay you beyond what is reasonable. Basically they have 20 min to get the puppy there. Once there, they can take what ever time it takes to complete the search.
