Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Oklahoma

responsibility after a death

My father just passed away, he and my mother are divorced. I have not heard from him in 5-6yrs. I was finally found after his death to arrange the burial. He left no will, was mostly destitute, except for 1100$ in checking. No life insurance policies were found. He had bills showing about 20,000 in debt, including a brand new car. What is my responsibility in all this. Do I have to pay his debt or take over his estate problems? His only income was SSI disability checks.

Re: responsibility after a death

Unless YOU signed something stating you would be responsible for his debts, then NO you are not, and his responsibility stopped at death. Walk away from the debts and don't look back!
