Music Royalties

How does one go about obtaining the rights to use music from their favorite artists? This would be for using their music in musical slideshows to be shared on the internet-- and possibly sold.

You would need to obtain permission from the owners of the music rights (composition and/or performance). One group that provides clearance assistance is Rumblefish, located in Portland, OR. They are on the internet at rumblefish.com

You have to negotiate to get permission from the owner of those rights. My firm focuses on Internet, media and entertainment law.

Go to allmusic.com and find your artist and song's composer. Then find the song's publisher by going to ASCAP.com or BMI.com. Once you know the publisher you can usually apply on their website. If you want to pay an attorney to do this, it will run from $175 per song to clear. You'll eventually need to sign a contract.
