Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania

I want to work either with a state police agency or an organization such as the FBI or ATF. I'm currently 18 and choosing my major. My advisor told me that any trouble I have been a part of can lead me to not receiving a job.

When I was 17 me and 3 of my friends were charged with vandalism and went to (I assume) small claims court. We were given the option to take community service in place of fines (I'm assuming we then plead no contest?). I'm wondering if this will have an effect?

I'd most likely want to start out in a state police job and not a national job like the FBI or ATF. Will state police check my record from before 18? Will that have even been put in records for me?

Thanks.
