Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania

penalties due on broken lease?

I have just vacated an apartment six months short of my year term. I have agreed to pay them 2 months rent on the vacant unit (FEB,MAR) and have told them they

could rent it freely as of the end of Jan 2002. I have been told by property management that in addition to the two months rent I will have to pay another 2 months penalty as well as my damage deposit. This adds up to $4,600.00 for a vacant Apt.

What can I do?

Re: penalties due on broken lease?

When you break a lease you are typically liable for any unrented time, however keeping your security deposit and two months seems inappropriate.

unfortunately there is not much you can do without legal counsel. I have been successful in some cases in negotiating a more reasonable settlement, also it would depend on the reason you vacate and how quickly they rent the apartment.
