how do I know how much I can earn without it affecting a social security check?

You do not say whether the social security check is for retirement, disability, SSI or another SS program.

If it is a disability check, the answer is complicated because you need to advise SSA that you are working. Returning to work or working part time is much too complicated to explain here. It is best if you meet with someone at your local office, who can explain.
