i am on ss disability. I have no other income, but recently found out that a relative left me a government bond. When I cash in this bond, will it affect my disability.

Re: ss disability and bond income

There are two basic types of disability claims: SSI & DIB.

If you did not work or did not work much, you may only have an SSI benefit. So if you are receiving SSI disability, that benefit will be effected by other income and assets.

However, if your benefit is a Disability Insurance Benefit (DIB), that benefit is not effected by other income or assets. So if you worked and pay Social Security tax before you became disabled, you were likely eligible for Disability not SSI. Check your documents or call SSA to confirm.
