Legal Question in Family Law in Rhode Island

what state governs

My wife and I were married in MA 30 yrs ago and have been residing in RI the past 20 yrs. We're about to proceed with an uncontested divorce and should we decide to go the ''fast'' route (Nevada, Guam, Dominican Republic) which state would govern whether the ''fast'', out of state divorce is legal?

Re: what state governs

The state of Rhode Island governs because you have been living there for more than one year prior to filing the divorce. I CANNOT MORE STRONGLY DISAGREE with your desire to go to some third world country for a divorce. It is completely unnecessary and foolhardy. A divorce can be obtained in RI for as little as $1,500.00 if it is truly uncontested, mediation is also available. Most importantly of all however is if you get the divorce in RI which is the proper jurisdiction there will be no issue of invalidity at a later date.
