Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in South Carolina

debt collectors seeking information

i would like to know if it is legal for a debt collector to call your surrounding neighbors to get information about you? i have had contact with the collector and trying to resolve the problem but it is taking longer as i have to find the original payoff info on this debt. it has been five years since it was supposedly paid and we are now just getting collection calls.

thank you

Re: debt collectors seeking information

My first reaction is that any claim for payment of a debt that is more than three years old is barred by the Statute of Limitations and you may have a claim for harassment. Check with an attorney in your area about your consumer protection rights.
