Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

Is child support fair

My husband left me and my two sons 8 months ago. (12 and 15 years old) We are trying to agree on terms for a seperation agreement. He has offered to pay $600 a month in child support. I would like to know if this is a fair amount. I do not want to be unfair. However, I will be raising 2 teenage sons and want to make sure that I can provide for them Thanks!

$600.00 a month is an arbitrary number until you factor in how much you make and how much he makes and how much you spend in child care. The South Carolina Department of Social Service website has a child support calculator to help you determine the amount your husband should be paying.

Re: Is child support fair

South Carolina has child support guidelines that determine how much the non-custodial parent must pay. It takes into consideration both parties' incomes as well as the cost of day care and health insurance for the children. Without knowing much more information about your specific situation, it's not possible to say whether $600 per month is too much, too little, or just right.

These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case. If you need more information, you can visit my family law blog (www.SCFamilyLaw.com) or our website (www.StevensFirm.com). I wish you the best of luck.
