Legal Question in Traffic Law in South Carolina

Traffic court rules, officer not showing up in court

I live in Columbia, SC and was cited for failing to to yield the right of way of a pedestrian at a very busy intersection in Irmo, SC when she walked out in front of me as I had been stopped and was attempting to make a right turn. I believe that I was not guilty of this and planned to plead not guilty. I am facing $235 in fines and 4 points on my license. The officer was not in court today, 1/17 and when they called me up, they told me that my case had been continued, handed me a letter dated 1/11/07 saying they did not believe the letter would reach me in time (although everyone knows it would reach me the next day being in the same city). They proceeded to say that the officer wrote down the wrong date and time on my ticket. Can they do that, I showed up on the appointed day and time I thought that if the officer did not show that the charges were dropped, not case continued. Do I have any legal recourse. They could have easily mailed the continuance notice that they handed me in court today and I would have gotten it several days before the scheduled date. Thanks for your assistance.

Sorry, but yes, they can do that. There is no recourse. Good luck.
