Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Beginning divorce proceedings

I am trying to do my own divorce work to save money. My husband and I want a dissolution of marriage. We have a minor child. Please help me to figure out what forms we need and where do we take them after we have filled them out. We are looking to hire an attorney to go over the forms to make sure they are filled out correctly and that our daughter is benefitting from our decisions. Thank you

Let me get this right: you are not willing to hire an attorney but you want free advice from an attorney on how to do your own divorce. The only thing I can tell you is that in all probability if you do your own divorce, it is going to cost you more in the long run to straighten out what you do than it will cost to have a lawyer do an uncontested divorce for you. Would you do surgery on yourself if you needed a doctor ? Think about it.

Re: Beginning divorce proceedings

Without regard to your particular case, some of the documents you have to prepare in a typical divorce include, but are not limitted to: Divorce Complaint, sometimes an answer to the complaint, marital dissolution agreement, final decree of divorce, quit claim deed, qualified domestic relations order, proposed parenting plan, final parenting plan, notice of filing certificate of completion of transparenting course, military affidavit, and there are others depending on the circumstances. I applaud you and your spouse for attempting to work things out amicably, but do you really think you can prepare each of these documents properly. Keep in mind, I refer to thses as documents, not "forms" as you have called them. Lawyers do not just fill out forms. We all have ways we prepare these documents, but no two are ever the same inasmuch as no two families are the same. If you are going to hire a lawyer to review you "forms" please consider paying the extra money to have the lawyer represent you throughout the proceedings. Good luck.
