Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

child support

I am currently paying child support to 3 children. A paternity test proved that I am not the father of one of the children, and therfore I would like to stop paying the child support. Those I have spoken with in Tennessee have told me that even though a test proved I was not the father, that it did not matter becasue my name is on that childs birth certificate as the father(for what its worth I was under 18 when I signed the certificate and the mother and I were not nor have ever been married). Is there a way I can stop paying support to this child and if so how much time and money are involved?

Re: child support

Dear Law Guru Friend,

The law is not stupid! It would be stupid for the law to make you pay child support for a child that is no relation to you. Therefore, the law provides a remedy for you to obtain an amended judgment stating that you do not have to pay child support for this child you are not the father of. You will just have to hire a lawyer and get into court and prove your case, prove that you are not the biological nor legal father of the child. Yes, there is something you can do! Best of luck!
