Legal Question in Immigration Law in Tennessee

changing name

I came to the United States as a refugee with another name. I would like to change my name to my original name. What is the procedure to do such change. Thank you

Re: changing name

Changing your name must be done through the local jurisdiction where you live. The normal procedure is to get with an attorney in the state where you live. There's a petition normally prepared and filed which basically says why you want to change your name. A copy is sent to the District Attorney's Office or State's Attorney or whatever they call it where you live to make sure you're not changing your name to avoid criminal liabilities, and an order will thereafter issue by a judge allowing and ordering the legal name change. It's a relatively simple procedure and shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg to do.

Thanks for your question and all the best.
