Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Texas

Civil Law

What's my rights? I was summoned to court 9/17/07, but because my daughter was in the Hospital with a blood infection where she almost died, I didn't show up. I told the Collection agency who says they are a law firm which I am pretty sure they are, that I couldn't go to court since she was there in the Hospital and they wanted me to make a payment arrangement. I was going to make the arrangement and made the arrangement prior to the knowledge of this happening to my daughter and realized that I couldn't make the payment since we had to pay outrageous amounts of parking fees. I tried calling them to let them know we would not be able to make the payment that we arranged and NO ONE answered. Now I get a letter that my payment went up and they said I could appeal the court decision, but that is what I was trying to avoid...I do not want to go to court. Now we have NO money because of being in the hospital. I can't pay this and now I have to go to Civil Court for something that I shouldn't be paying anyway...what are my civil rights? I can't afford this bill at all.
