I purchased a car before I got married I was working and so was my husband the payments were being met but when I was abandend by my husband 6 months preguant. I could no longer make the car payments as a divorce and single parent along with other debts that he left me so I called the car creditor and told them this and I took the car back into the dealer I was not behind at the time on the notes and owed about $6,000 on it. And this is the amount they are still trying to get from me. So it does not appear that they have auctioned it or given me a different amount. This car was turn in to them the car dealer about 2 years ago. Now I am being harrassed constantly by this collection firm for the creditor with messages left on my parents phone who has nothing to do with this. I told them I could not pay them then neither can I pay them now my ex-husband do not pay the support that the court ordered him to they don't know his whereabouts. I am barely surviving taking care of my child alone from day to day. My salary is not much but I make it streach due to the fact that I pay $300.00 monthly for child care. And there is not much left to survive on with a growing 3 year old and her needs. please help.

Re: car turned back in not repossed

Write to them, certified mail, stating that you dispute the debt, demand an accounting and documentation concerning the disposition of the car you returned, and that all further communications are to be in writing.

That should hold them off a little while, and see what they're able to come up with.
