Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Phone Harrassment

I got a phone call from a collection agency stating I owed $291. for hot checks I wrote in 2001. I honestly didnot know what he was talking about and asked him to send me something in the mail as proof. He flat out refused to and said I conveniently blocked it out of my head. He was extremely rude saying if I didn't send a western union for the amount by 5pm that he was going to have a warrant for my arrest as early as tomorrow (today). The bank I had an account with back in 2001, I closed down cause I moved to where I am at now. I left a forwarding address with the post office and have not received anything from the bank, the collection agency or the place I supposedly wrote these checks too. What choice do I have? Am I supposed to send $291. to a place I know nothing about after him refusing to disclose his address and any proof as to this collection?

Re: Phone Harrassment

If the collector calls you back, ask for the name and address where you could send the money. Then send a letter, certified mail, denying the debt, demanding proof of the debt, and stating that all further communications are to be in writing.

If they again threaten criminal charges, contact an attorney that's familiar with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
