Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

can charges be pressed against me?

I received a check in the mail. My fiance figured is was reimbursement for my school. I went to my usual, local check cashing place to cash it. Spent the money. A few weeks later, the check cashing place contacted me to say that the check was some scam and asked me if I was involved. OF COURSE I had NO IDEA so I asked them for a copy of the check and called the bank that issued the check. They informed me that there was this big scam going on and that anyone who cashes these check would be an accomplice to the scam. I personally know the owners of the check cashing place and they want their money back, but I do not have it. Can they press charges on me? I don't want any trouble, but they have wrote me a letter requesting I pay them the money back, or they will file charges on me with the police.
