If your father is not getting along with his attorney he can fire the lawyer and ask the court to appoint him another one.

I am not sure about what the procedures and laws are in Texas, but in California most courts will make it very difficult for a client to fire his or her public defender. Unless all forms of communication have broken down between the two, or the lawyer is deemed incompetent, the courts will not allow a client/defendant to switch to another attorney.
