Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

In Texas: Arrest in August 2010 alleging assault (dismissed) and illegal gun. An ATF agent is threatening arrest, prison, etc.. if defendent does not provide information about and introductions to drug dealers. The defendent does not have this information and can only get it from friends of friends compromising his safety. Are there other legal remedies?

Hire a lawyer. IF the defendant could be charged with an offense, the ATF agent does NOT have the authority to make the decision (except to just not report it to the prosecutor.) If he is going to cooperate, he needs a lawyer to work with the prosecutor (NOT the agent) to come to an agreement regarding prosecution.

Without more information, the question of whether he should attempt cooperation cannot be answered.
